Kathi and Gene Sandburg, parents of a fallen Navy officer, were gifted a mortgage-free house in Port St. Lucie, Florida, that will be really to move into in July 2022.
The city partnered with GL Homes under the PSL Gold Star Family Home Giveaway to donate the 2,435-square-foot home. The house will have two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a two-car garage.
“They’re honoring our son, our hero,” Kathi told WPBF. “And you know as a Gold Star mom, we never want him to be forgotten. And the more that people say his name, he continues to live on.”
Their son, Brendon Sandburg, served as a petty officer in the Navy, where he was assigned to Branch Medical Clinic in Yuma, Arizona, as a Naval hospital corpsman. Sadly, he died during a helicopter training exercise, leaving behind his family and 18-month-old daughter.
According to WPBF, Brendon was awarded numerous medals including the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medal, the Navy Expeditionary medal, the Combat Action ribbon, the Army Achievement medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service medal, two Navy Good Conduct medals, the National Defense Service medal, three Navy Sea Service Deployment ribbons, and the Navy Expert Pistol and Expert Rifleman medals.
Sarah Alsofrom, director of community relations with GL Homes, says the Sandburgs are a very deserving family of this knew home. GL Homes is excited to be able to give back to them and give them a house of their own, in honor of their son who made the ultimate sacrifice.
