Marine veteran Ben Lindsey was on his way home from work one Tuesday evening when he came across a car stranded in the middle of a heavy rainstorm. It was rush hour, and the stalled vehicle was causing a major backup in a busy intersection, NBC reports.
Inside the car were two young women who were getting anxious as the water level continued to rise.
“She had to move one way or another, so I figured I might as well jump out and help,” Lindsey said. “I took a deep breath and kind of sighed a little bit cause I was like ‘Man this is gonna suck.’ Then I just jumped out and started pushing.”
Pushing a car that has run out of gas is difficult enough on a sunny day, as NBC’s Gage Goulding demonstrates in the video below. This Marine veteran knew the challenge and threw himself into a position to make the most difference, despite any personal inconvenience.
Lindsey pushed the women out of the intersection and into a nearby parking lot. Before long, the Colonial Boulevard and Fowler Street intersection was clearing up. But, what the veteran may not have realized was someone else caught his selfless act on camera.
For this Marine veteran, acts of service were part of his daily job for four years. It can be hard to leave that behind, and Lindsey obviously hasn’t.
“Your duty, I feel like, to other human beings is to be nice,” he said. “I didn’t think about how wet I was going to get or how hard it was raining. I just knew that she needed help.”
See how Lindsey took action during this downpour in the video below.
