Things To Consider When Becoming A Surrogate

Each woman who embarks on the journey as a surrogate mother has her own unique reasons as to what compels her. For some, they may have heard of a heartbreaking story of infertility where a woman was unable to carry her own child or perhaps a woman who is cancer clear but her treatments rendered her infertile.

The surrogacy path is rife with distinction but has one common goal: To make parenthood dreams come true.

As each surrogate mother comes from different backgrounds and professions, there’s an internal calling to help those in need and to be of service. However, taking the first steps in learning how to become a surrogate mother can be overwhelming.

As a co-founder of an international surrogate and egg donor agency, there are distinct checklist items a potential candidate must consider before applying. It’s just as important for a surrogate to interview an agency as it is for an agency to interview her.

It’s a symbiotic relationship.

The most important recommendation is for a candidate to research the best surrogate agencies. A top-tier agency will help navigate her.

Most reputable agencies will require a candidate to undergo a physical and psychological screening to ensure she will be able and capable to undergo this journey.

Also, a surrogate must already be a mother and have one or more children. Above all, she must have had healthy pregnancies and enjoy being pregnant.

During the application and screening process, an agency will want to be sure that a candidate is living a healthy lifestyle which includes:

• No smoking

• No use of recreational drugs

• Maintain a healthy weight

• Maintain a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or lower

A respected agency will also want to be certain that the monies a surrogate receives will not be her primary income. While surrogates can earn $35,000 or more, this money is viewed as supplemental. Most agencies will be forthcoming and advise candidates that they cannot be on any government assistance.

Having support during a surrogacy journey will be abundant at an agency in good standing, but it’s also imperative to have this type of support at home. It’s important that a woman’s family be unified because surrogacy is a journey for everyone in the household.

Being a surrogate also means to have some flexibility in one’s schedule for doctor’s appointments, tests, and medical screenings.

When choosing an agency, consider the following key factors:

• The surrogate agency is not operated as a home-based business and that it actually has a brick and mortar official headquarters

• Compensation, life insurance, monthly payments, and direct deposit options

• Any travel related expenses are paid ahead of time by the agency, and a surrogate does not pay

• The agency is affiliated with top fertility specialists and legal experts

Some of the best surrogate agencies actually have former surrogates working with them. This gives women traveling down the road for the very first time a great deal of peace of mind since these veterans have been there before.

After finding a few agencies, interview them more than once and ask if it would be possible to speak with any current or former surrogates from the agency. Any reputable business would be honored to do so.
