Vietnam War Veteran’s Left Speechless After He’s Surprised With Engraved Park Bench

Dozens of family members and people from the community gathered around as Vietnam War veteran Thomas Lee was surprised with a park bench engraved with his name at the Veterans Tribute Park in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Lee, who served in the U.S. Army, was left speechless and was not expecting something like this to be done for him, especially at a place that he holds near and dear to his heart.

Lee visits Veterans Tribute Park every single day. The park offers a connection to his history and has been very important to his mental health, especially during COVID. The outdoor space is a great place for Lee to spend time at, instead of being cooped up in the house.

The park bench surprised was organized by Adam Kohls, who works with the Chippewa Valley Veterans Tribute Foundation. On it is a plaque that says, “For Tom Lee, His Place to Find Comfort, Peace, and Fellowship.”

“It was very humbling. We’ve spent many years on this project for veterans just like [Thomas]. It’s cool to be a part of the experience,” he told WQOW. This place is a place to heal, place to reflect, and place to connect with other veterans. More importantly, just teach everyone the past, the present, and just keep the legacy going for all of our veterans in the Chippewa Valley.”

Kohls said this is certainly not the last bench that will be built here to honor veterans.

“I think all the vets should be here to enjoy the park,” Lee said. “It’s their park. It does give me peace to be here.”
