WWII Veteran Rode A Helicopter Around A Ship Named After Her Husband To Celebrate 100 Years Of Life

The number of veterans that are still alive from World War II is dropping quickly. Some of them are still around, however, and some are doing epic things.

This includes one US Navy veteran who managed to hit the century mark.

Ima Black gave an interview with WJXT, to discuss what she decided to do for her celebration of 100 years of life. She was going to fly in a helicopter.

Black was part of the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service program in the Navy during World War II.

According to the Naval Station Mayport in Mayport, Florida, she was a seaman first class storekeeper.

She was also the wife of Delbert D. Black for five decades. He survived Pearl Harbor and, eventually, became the chief of naval operations, which made him the highest-ranking enlisted man to serve in the Navy.

The Navy recognized his contribution and named a destroyer after him. That occurred in 2000, and the ship was the USS Delbert D. Black. During her helicopter ride, she was able to fly around the ship and the crew was there to greet her.

Even after they made their trip around the USS Delbert D. Black, she was still ready for more. She wanted to fly to downtown Jacksonville, and the crew was able to take her there.

The helicopter pilot also chimed in during the interview, saying: “It was an honor to fly Ms. Black and show her the city of Jacksonville from the sky and what we, what we get to see every day. She got a great view because it’s the seat that provides the best view out the cabin side door.”
