Am I being scammed? WTF is this?! Mid-Atlantic Consolidated Patient Account Center sounds sketchy. I received a phone call after this letter also.. : Veterans

I’ve received a very suspicious but official looking letter from VA Mid-Atlantic Consolidated Patient Accounts Center (MACPAC).

I called my insurer and told them to initiate a COB but thought that’s the end of it… or so I thought.

Today at work I get a call from 706-731-7276 (I reverse looked up this number and doesn’t appear to be a legitimate VA number) and spoke briefly to a lady who abruptly told me that I basically needed to do what the letter said… I asked her about the COB (she didn’t know what that was…) but she did give me a group number that appears legitimate… I won’t give that # here but its a group policy number. The reason I said appears to be legitimate is because I called a VA Community Care number who actually relayed to me the very same group policy number. The lady on the phone (at the 706 number) said I had a appointment last year that needed to be closed out but she could not give me any details on what the appointment was for…claiming she would have to investigate it because it was “so old”. She is claiming that my primary healthcare insurance is Georgia (it’s not) and that if I’m seen in Georgia for a community based referral that the VA charges the Georgia number… what?!

Anyways more on the MACPAC….

They are allegedly located 128 Bingham Rd. If you google them there is barely any information out there on this alleged business. I looked up the MACPAC in Ashville, NC and got a address 128 Bingham Rd Ste 500 Asheville , NC, 28806-3896 (see link). There is a number 828-257-3400 on this dnb.com site but no one answers.

I called a nearby business and the lady on the phone confirmed to the business is federal and official but still I’m not so convinced.

I did find a reference here to the MACPAC (https://www.oprm.va.gov/docs/foia/VHA_FOIA_Directory_3_18_2014.pdf) down on page 6 so that bodes well that it is a legitimate place.

I tried calling Asheville VA but could not find a working number. (https://www.asheville.va.gov/)

I tried calling JENNY WATTS on the letter at 828-257-2375 and left a message and never got a call back. I reverse look up the # and it does not go to a VA number. So I don’t know…

Am I freaking out over nothing? I have not really said anything yet beyond calling my insurer directly and initiating a “COB”.
