Hello Community.
I’m retired Navy (Enlisted, Jet Mech [Aviation Machinist Mate, AD] and I work part time for a non-profit Veteran Support Organization (VSO) that coordinates free-to-community courses in a wide range of artistic endeavors, the Armed Services Arts Partnership (ASAP).
We offer some courses (courses = multi-week) and workshops (workshops = single day, 3-4 hours) based on curriculum we developed (Comedy Bootcamp, Storytelling Bootcamp) and other courses and workshops in partnership with art orgs in Hampton Roads, DC, and Indiana (more areas to come online in the next 2-3 years).
All of our offerings are free to those who attend, open to Veterans, Active Duty Service Members, their family members, and Caregivers. We pay the arts orgs we partner with, hence the classes are not free but free to attendees…
Currently, our courses are online, via zoom, but we will eventually go back to in-person, we’ve been offering courses since 2017. We do have a couple of in-person courses coming up in the 757 and look forward to expanding them as conditions allow.
Our courses are top notch (this aint some half-effort web recording, this is live material, taught by experienced comics, storytellers, painters, artists etc.) and while they are NOT considered art therapy, we hear time and time again that they ARE therapeutic. Even better, the follow on community engagement is right up there with your local VET orgs, if not even deeper and more meaningful (something I really missed after retirement, the community, and I could not find it at many of the local orgs…).
We are pushing to reach new communities and groups, hence my posting here on Reddit. If you would like to learn more and maybe test the waters, we have a Comedy Crash Course (Virtual, 3 hours long) coming up on 06 April, 2021, 6-9 PM ET and we have open seats, but that’s only a drop in the bucket compared to our other upcoming sessions like Basic Intarsia (in person-Norfolk, VA), Storytelling Crash Course, Screenwriting workshop, Drawing Comics workshop, Improv Taster, and more.
You can apply to 06 April Comedy Crash Course here (look for the large black “sign up” button): https://www.asapasap.org/crashcourse
See all of the workshops here: https://www.asapasap.org/workshopschedule

I hope this message reaches someone who needs some community engagement, wants to learn a new skill, or just wants to hang with other vets etc., even if it’s only virtually and for three hours.
