Sylvester Stallone, The Expendables and The Old Man Run

It happens to the best of us, even the invincible Sylvester Stallone. Like many before him, Sylvester Stallone has finally developed the ‘old man run’. Bad knees, seized joints, brittle bones – the old man run is an inevitable fact of life. As evidence of this I suggest one particular scene from Stallone’s latest movie, The Expendables. The Expendables is a fun action movie with an ensemble cast including Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Terry Crews, Randy Couture and Steve Austin. There are plenty of memorable moments in The Expendables, and one of those moments is the painful few seconds where Sylvester Stallone ran down a wharf to jump into a plane.

A look at some of Stallone’s early work shows that he never was the most gracious of runners. I remember fondly the training montage come playful romp he and Carl Weathers had in Rocky 3; the scene that went from sprint race on the beach to the two skipping and jumping joyously in the ocean. Sylvester Stallone did a lot of running in the Rocky movies; it was one of their signatures, for example when Rocky would run through the Philadelphia streets or up those famous stairs. He ran occasionally in the Rambo movies too.

There is no question Stallone is in great shape; unnaturally good shape to be honest. He is muscular and sinewy, and perfect for the gnarled, warrior-veteran roles he is playing these days. However, one thing he should probably remove from his movie repertoire though, is the run. It’s no big deal. Steven Seagal had to avoid running in his movies due to a questionable running style, and he made good action movies once upon a time. I’m sure other actors may insist on only being filmed from certain angles. That’s the movie business.

The sooner Stallone removes running from movies, the sooner there won’t be a scene that breaks me out of my movie engrossment and make me realise the sad fact that Stallone is possibly getting too old for this. Hopefully Stallone has many more years of owning the action genre, sans running of course.
