If you are new to Multi Level Marketing (MLM) or even if you are a veteran, heed these points. First understand that MLM is a system of being in business for you. It is often said that in MLM you are in business for yourself, but not by yourself.
If you chose to go into a traditional business, the following is a list of common necessities.
- An idea or plan
- Capital
- Location
- Inventory
- Market
Each entity above would be supplied either through your own investment or your sweat equity, or a combination of both. As an entrepreneur, you will learn what the term, self starting means. If you don’t get up or get out, then you don’t eat.
Many people start businesses everyday to find that it is not easy. You must have a burning desire to conquer your success. You have to be independent, yet dependent on your market and others in order to succeed. Don’t panic because you sometimes feel like the one man band, having to play all the parts to make things work. It’s just part of the formula to success.
When you enter the world of MLM, you discover that you can be a maverick in your own right. But, you have the advantage of others to help you become successful. Many of us enter MLM with the wrong concepts of the business. We enter it with what I call a welfare mentality. Sure you have a sponsor, and it is in your sponsor’s best interest to work with you and help you to become successful.
Many distributors misunderstand the concept of having good sponsorship. A good sponsor can only make it in MLM by producing success stories. If he can help enough people to become successful, then he can become a success. You, as a new recruit, must quickly learn to become the bird, that when pushed out of the nest will fly on your own. Although in MLM your sponsor will still be there to coach you, help you and sometimes even catch you.
However don’t expect your sponsor to fly for you. On a plane, you are told to put the oxygen mask on yourself first. Then you place it on the other person that needs your help. If you pass out then the person that is depending on your help will perish. A sponsor’s first duty is to help himself, which he does by developing others to do what it takes to become successful.
Good sponsors are there to always help you when you need it. But you must swiftly learn to fly on your own. Therefore you must develop in order for you to become a success in your own right. You need to evolve, so that you can help push your recruits out of the nest. This is how they will learn to fly and soar like you and like your sponsor.
Don’t have the attitude that your sponsor is totally responsible to build your business for you. This will tend to make your sponsor ineffective. Remember, she is building her own business, just like you. Learn from your sponsor and not burden her with the responsibility of building her business and yours too. Remember that your business is your business. The program is Multi Level Marketing (MLM) and not Multi Level Welfare (MLW). If you have a sponsor that is helpful financially to you in your business, cherish it. But don’t misuse it.
If you will review the criteria above for being in your own business, you see that capital is part of that list. When people go into business they must have capital or have a conduit to acquire it. Some have the attitude that since their sponsor receives an override on them that they should try to reclaim it. They will say that “he makes money off of me.” When you go to the grocery store, do they give back money? They make money off of you too. That’s called Capitalism. You too will make money off of your customers and your recruits.
Remember that your sponsor is not the bank. If he chooses to help you in your business, be thankful, but not dependent. Don’t have a tendency to expect your sponsor to finance and be responsible for your success. He has to finance his own success.
Look at reality. If you are going to choose someone to literally give the gift of success to, who is it going to be? In most cases it is going to be a close relative or friend; a person that you handpicked. You wouldn’t give someone else this gift, just because they are on your team. Would you do that? If not, then why do you expect that of your sponsor?
Remember the golden rule “Do unto others as you would have them to do unto you.” Work with your sponsor in the same way that you want your recruits to work with you. Working as a team is a wonderful thing, when everyone understands that we are a team. Each one is responsible for their own success. However, we are all responsible for the success of the team. If we weigh one member of the team down (your sponsor) too much that creates a weak link in the team. That can break the chain because he is bearing too much.
Just remember that you are your own responsibility, yet you are part of a team. “Team work makes the dream work.” TEAM is “Together Everyone Accomplishes More. Be an MLMer and not a MLWer.
